Although the Obama campaign organization tried repeatedly to trivialize the picture and explain away the  reason that it was taken,, never once to this date have they denied the authenticity of the photograph.

Quick Quip… The Press Condemns Obama Over Paris Snub.

 Why ?

TOPSHOTS French President Francois Holla

World leaders join in Paris march to show solidarity in the War Against Muslim terrorism

It is very refreshing to see and hear the unprecedented criticism in and by the press of Obama’s decision to boycott the memorial march in Paris last weekend. Quite frankly, he is not classy enough to be in the presence of the 40 courageous, world leaders of every faith who did attend.

daily news 1.12.15However refreshing the almost universal commendation by the liberal press for his unexcused absence in Paris might be, a cynic like the Crusty Conservative has to question the motives behind this press criticism. Could it simply be that most of the victims of the muslim attacks were journalists and that the attack on Charlie was an attack on Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Expression and the Freedom of Press. As one reporter said shortly after the attack on the French magazine – “Today We Are All French”. Maybe he should have paraphrased and said – “Today We Are All Journalists” and like NATO an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.

Would the press’ condemnation of Obama be as severe or universal if the victims of the Paris muslim attack were French Croissant Bakers?

I rather doubt it.

Obama Causes Another Crisis

5/7/14 – LA Traffic Crisis

In the Chinese language the word “crisis” is written as two characters. The first character represents “danger” while the second stands for “opportunity”.

Fundraising

Fundraising

Every time that Obama visits Los Angeles for one of his frequent fundraisers, he puts LA’s fragile, congested traffic system in danger of gridlock and total collapse. Miles and miles of freeway lanes and surface streets are cordoned for him while hundreds of intersections are closed to allow his large motorcades safe and swift passage.

Tonight, the Los Angeles’ traffic system will again be in real danger of total collapse as Air

Presidential Gridlock

Presidential Gridlock

Force One touches down at LAX at exactly 5 PM. The arrival will be followed, at the height of rush hour, by two large presidential motorcades through West LA, Culver City, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills enroute to a fundraiser in Bel Air and then back to Century City. These motorcades will bring the entire Westside of Los Angeles to a standstill during rush hours and put commuters in danger of complete gridlock.

According to the Chinese definition of the word crisis, tonight’s motorcades will raise the gridlock danger to the crisis level as the element of opportunity is added to the imminent traffic dangers.  Los Angeles all news radio station KNX has identified a major opportunity for them from the impending traffic nightmare and are capitalizing on it. They have announced that their newly established “Special Presidential Motorcade Traffic Desk” will be operational all afternoon and evening bringing up to the minute traffic info to listeners every 5 minutes. Rumor has it that the costs of commercials on that station before and after these frequent “Special Presidential Motorcade Traffic Reports” have more than doubled from their normal costs. Congratulations to KNX on their resourcefulness in identifying and exploiting this opportunity and raising what would normally be just another danger to the level of a crisis.

Danger + Opportunity = Crisis

–John Dickinson, Letters of Fabius, 1788

Today is Presidents Day, but there is no flag flying at my house.

Today is Presidents Day, but there is no flag flying at my house.

As a patriotic American, I celebrate and commemorate most national holidays including both Armistice Day and Veteran’s Day, regular as well as Confederate Memorial day, etc. However, I do not and will not observe or commemorate today’s so called Presidents Day holiday which I consider to be the ultimate exercise in political correctness.

presidential sealWith the declaration of President’s Day, Congress has asked us to honor and commemorate all of our Presidents – good, bad or indifferent – equally, in the same way and on the same day. While I honor and respect the Office of the President of the United States, I do not necessarily respect all of the men who occupied it nor will I honor any of them simply because they were once elected President.

For example:

…I will not and can not honor the sexual predator Bill Clinton in the same way, with the same breath or on the same day as we honor President Ronald Reagan.

…I will not and can honor the peacenik Jimmy Carter in the same manner, with the same respect or on the same day as we honor a great American hero and the liberator of Europe- President Dwight Eisenhower.

..Nor can I honor the serial liar currently occupying the White House with the same degree of admiration and trust and on the same day that I honor George Washington “who could not tell a lie”.

Instead I choose to individually honor the Presidents whom I admire and who contributed to the greatness of this country on the days of their birth rather than being politically correct and honoring and respecting all former presidents equally. They were not all equal and as individuals do not deserve equal honor or respect.

“There go my people. I am their leader. So, therefore I must follow them.”

Advice to the GOP from an Old Political Pro

Last fall, as the Obama administration struggled to implement the so called “Affordable (Health) Care Act”, the Republican Party was the fortuitous recipient of an unexpected and  pivotal issue on which to run in 2014 with the strong backing of the vast majority of the American electorate. That issue was issue was and is – the repeal of ObamaCare.

Never in my 60+ years of following and participating in politics have I seen a domestic issue garner such overwhelming grassroots support so swiftly as the call for repeal of ObamaCare did. As the Obama repeal obamacareadministration tried to implement and then fix this flawed legislation millions of Americans lost their healthcare coverage, saw their health insurance premiums skyrocket, and/or saw their work hours shrink as employers attempted to avoid providing health insurances to some of their workers.  These factors caused well over 50% of the electorate to rise up and voice very strong disapproval of the Obamacare program.

The Republicans in Congress, who had voted 100% against this unpopular legislation, were handed a winning issue on a platter – not by political hacks and strategists but by the electorate itself. This was a made in heaven issue on which they could run in November, retain control of the House and most likely re-take the Senate. But snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, the repeal of ObamaCare will not be the central issue and central talking point of the GOP’s fall campaign. Rather, House Republicans last week at their annual retreat, on the insistence of their leadership, decided to make the highly unpopular issue of immigration reform and amnesty the centerpiece of their fall campaign.

Speaker of the House John Boehner

Speaker of the House
John Boehner

DAHA, Mr.Boehner –  YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING!

To downgrade a campaign issue that has overwhelming national support in favor of an issue that is overwhelmingly opposed by your party’s base and independents alike is suicidal stupidity. Amnesty is an issue that many feel, contrary to Mr. Boehner and the House leadership’s view, will not bring Hispanic voters into the GOP camp in the near term and most likely will be a Trojan Horse that will swell Democratic voter rolls in the future as these newly legalized immigrants and/or their offspring will predictably and eventually be granted citizenship and the right to vote. Regardless what the House leadership says, amnesty for today’s illegal immigrants will eventually,  in 5, 10, or maybe even 20 year, lead to citizenship for today’s illegal’s.

This political pivot that this change in strategy represents is not only stupid; it is destined to be a failed political strategy for the Republicans.   The Crusty Conservative, in a post last June, discussed the fact that immigration reform was not a significant enough of an  issue among Hispanic voters to cause them to vote Republican. Additionally, I pointed out statistical studies that provide evidence showing on a national basis that Republicans would have to garner over 70% of the Hispanic vote (an almost impossible task) for that alone to effect the outcome of a presidential election.

Click  to Read The Crusty Conservative’s June 2013 Post re immigration reform

If the Republicans are serious about maintaining the House, re-taking the Senate in 2014 and laying the groundwork for a 2016 Presidential victory, they should:

#1  – Forget about immigration reform and amnesty. That issue will lose them more votes among their conservative base, tea party members and independents than they could ever hope to gain from Hispanic voters because of their support for this issue and

#2  – Instead aim every available electoral weapon at ObamaCare and the Democrats who voted for it.

ObamaCare is the one issue that a majority of grassroots voters, Republicans and Democrats alike, care about. It is a popular issue that the Republicans can use to gain House and Senate seats in the Fall. Republicans, please don’t throw away a once in a lifetime opportunity to win by trying to appease a voting bloc that will never vote Republican simply because of its stand on immigration.

It is time for the leadership in the US House of Representatives to fulfill their constitutional duty and Represent The People. As the late Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley once said –

“There go my people. I am their leader. So, therefore I must follow them.”

The Keystone XL Pipeline from an Oilfield Perspective

Guest Commentary –

Note: The following commentary was written by The Crusty Conservative’s grandson – Mike Lee. Mike is a Production Supervisor for a major oil exploration company in Ventura County, California. He wrote the following commentary out of frustration over Obama’s current energy policies.

The Keystone XL Pipeline from an Oilfield Perspective

It takes a lot to get me to write my opinions down but listening to the political rhetoric involving the Keystone XL pipeline and following the writings of my grandfather (aka The Crusty Conservative) I have finally gotten to that point.

Over the last few days I have read a handful of articles where President Obama has tipped his hand to show us how he really feels about my industry and how little he actually knows about economics.  As a twenty-eight year old oilfield worker, I have become frustrated with the fact that not only must I support the previous generation through Social Security which I am unlikely to see, and through high taxes which pay pensions to groups that are living more comfortably than I should expect to in retirement. And now I must also protect the future generations by not tapping into natural resources that are readily available.

When I entered the industry in 2005 oil prices were just below forty dollars a barrel and to say the least oil was not a very lucrative business.  Sometime shortly after that prices spiked to as high as $150 a barrel and American oil was reborn.  It was now profitable to invest in enhanced recovery methods to get crude out of the ground.  Along the way American dependence on foreign oil declined, however we continue to import from foreign countries.

Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Qatar, Libya, the U.A.E, Algeria, Nigeria, Ecuador, and Angola are the current members of the “Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries” (OPEC) and still have control over the global supply of oil which dictates price.  The amount of money we, as Americans, have given to these mostly hostile countries (through oil purchases and/or foreign aid) is tremendous.  The attention that it makes us pay to that region of the world is utterly absurd, all to protect our interests… in oil.

I read an article today that told of Prince Alwaleed bin Talal of Saudi Arabia warning in a letter to the Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi and others that the U.S. boom of shale oil and gas will reduce our country’s thirst for Saudi crude oil.  It continued to state that 92% of their budget is dependent on oil exports.  During the fall of the Qaddafi regime in Libya, that country suffered massive economic setbacks largely due to the loss of oil output.  Isn’t that a nice change?  To see these countries worried that we won’t send one of our top resources (the American dollar) their way puts a smile on my face.

Meanwhile back in the states, as a result of horizontal drilling, water/steam/CO2 flooding, and implementation of newer technologies, California, Texas, Colorado, and especially North Dakota are seeing record breaking production numbers in fields long thought to be exhausted.  To the north, our friendly neighbors in Canada have also been able to capitalize on a higher barrel price.  What was long locked up in sand and too costly to process is now so profitable that  they have an excess.  Thus the Keystone XL pipeline was born to transport their excess oil from Canada to Texas for refining and ultimately our use.  Unfortunately, around that same time that Keystone was proposed, we saw one of the worst oil spills in history right off of our Gulf Coast which to the general public was very discouraging.  BP’s spill was a worst case scenario – exploratory drilling in a deep zone had never been done before.  Their following failures to control and cap, with the potential cover ups and blame game caused  the general public to lose a lot of faith in the wisdom of running a pipeline across one of the richest aquifers in our country, the Ogallala.  After rerouting, multiple studies, and building in redundancy after redundancy designed to protect it, the Keystone was once again ready for the White House.

But no, Obama refuses.  During a time when a war is being raged on coal, Fukushima fear is shutting down nuclear power, and solar energy is being proven an inefficient use of  taxpayer dollars over and over, our leadership is blocking what can be referred to quite literally, as a blessing from above.  To tell the American public that this pipeline will only create fifty jobs is either a flat out lie or Obama really is the most inept and uninformed president since Jimmy Carter.  The number is not simply how many people will manage the pipeline when it is completed, or even how many people will build the pipeline, but rather how many people will benefit from the pipeline –  all of us.  All of us use gasoline, plastic, or electricity in some shape or form, most specifically gasoline.  Groceries today are more expensive because of freight costs.  Many people have been forced to switch jobs because commuting has become uneconomical.  Others have seen their companies fail or cut back to accommodate fuel costs.  To alleviate the new normal at the pump through the Keystone XL pipeline would have exponential positive effects on our economy.

And what about global warming?  First, prove it.  This beautiful blue planet has been through many heating and cooling cycles since long before the industrial revolution.  If you cannot measure and correlate global warming, then you should not set broad laws to restrict progress in the name of preserving the environment.

Finally, if we don’t use the Canadian oil you can rest assured that someone else will.  Let’s give China one more advantage over us – right?  Wrong.  Barak Hussein Obama needs to stop courting special interests and provide for the American interest; and work towards our freedom from oppressive overseas countries while restoring our  liberty to provide for our families.

About the time that Mike was writing the above commentary, The Crusty Conservative and his wife Pat attended a talk at by Stephen Moore at “The Young Americans For Freedom’s” Reagan Ranch Center in Santa Barbara. Mr. Moore who is an Editorial Board Member and Senior Economics Writer at  The Wall Street Journal unknowingly endorsed Mike Lee’s

premises as outlined above and further predicted that the U.S. could be a net energy exporter in 10 years if the government allowed modern oil and gas extraction methods to be used and allowed the infrastructure (including the Keystone XL pipeline) necessary to extract, transport and refine these products to be built. To illustrate his point, he discussed  the amount of natural gas being wasted simply for the lack of a means to transport it to market, Moore described flying over the Bakken area of North Dakota at night and seeing what from the air looked like a major population center. However, the lights that he saw were not from communities or buildings. Instead, they were oil drilling sites where natural gas (a by-product of the process by which oil is being extracted in North Dakota) was being flared into the atmosphere and burned instead of being utilized or placed in a pipeline and transported to customers because of the lack of pipelines. Moore stated that in this area alone millions of cubic feet of valuable natural gas were being burnt off daily because there are no pipelines to get it to market. Below is a picture of  gas flaring and two pictures from a space satellite showing what Moore described.
