Please fly your American Flag 1/7

As an independent voter,The Crusty Conservative has great admiration for the last President of the United States who was a member of neither the Republican nor the Democratic parties –

Millard Fillmore

(January 7, 1800 – March 8, 1874)

The 13th President of the United States (1850–1853) was neither a Democrat nor a Republican. As Zachary Taylor‘s vice president, he assumed the presidency after Taylor’s death. Fillmore was a lawyer from western New York state. He was a vocal opponent of the policies of President Andrew Jackson and his Democratic Party. In particular, he supported the supremacy of Congress over the Presidency and favored a program of modernization, banking and economic protectionism to stimulate American  manufacturing.

Special Note: Several readers have asked why The Crusty Conservative does not fly his American Flag on a daily basis but rather seems to do so only on special occasions and not every day.
By way of explanation, I am a proud, patriotic veteran who flies a lighted American Flag in the atrium of his home 24/7. However, I purposely do not fly an American Flag in front of my home on a daily basis . I do this so that friends, neighbors and  passers-by do not take the flag’s presence for granted. Rather, I  publicly fly my American Flag only on national holidays and specific patriotic occasions in the hope that people will notice that the flag is flying that day and be motivated to ask or research what is the significance of that particular day that would cause the Crusty Conservative to publicly fly his Flag. My hope is that in doing this, I will cause people to ask questions, investigate and learn about their American Heritage.

Today is Presidents Day, but there is no flag flying at my house.

Today is Presidents Day, but there is no flag flying at my house.

As a patriotic American, I celebrate and commemorate most national holidays including both Armistice Day and Veteran’s Day, regular as well as Confederate Memorial day, etc. However, I do not and will not observe or commemorate today’s so called Presidents Day holiday which I consider to be the ultimate exercise in political correctness.

presidential sealWith the declaration of President’s Day, Congress has asked us to honor and commemorate all of our Presidents – good, bad or indifferent – equally, in the same way and on the same day. While I honor and respect the Office of the President of the United States, I do not necessarily respect all of the men who occupied it nor will I honor any of them simply because they were once elected President.

For example:

…I will not and can not honor the sexual predator Bill Clinton in the same way, with the same breath or on the same day as we honor President Ronald Reagan.

…I will not and can honor the peacenik Jimmy Carter in the same manner, with the same respect or on the same day as we honor a great American hero and the liberator of Europe- President Dwight Eisenhower.

..Nor can I honor the serial liar currently occupying the White House with the same degree of admiration and trust and on the same day that I honor George Washington “who could not tell a lie”.

Instead I choose to individually honor the Presidents whom I admire and who contributed to the greatness of this country on the days of their birth rather than being politically correct and honoring and respecting all former presidents equally. They were not all equal and as individuals do not deserve equal honor or respect.
