Special Note: Several readers have asked why The Crusty Conservative does not fly his American Flag on a daily basis but rather seems to do so only on special occasions and not every day.
By way of explanation, I am a proud, patriotic veteran who flies a lighted American Flag in the atrium of his home 24/7. However, I purposely do not fly an American Flag in front of my home on a daily basis . I do this so that friends, neighbors and  passersbys do not take the flag’s presence for granted. Rather, I  publicly fly my American Flag only on national holidays and specific patriotic occasions in the hope that people will notice that the flag is flying that day and be motivated to ask or research what is the significance of that particular day that would cause the Crusty Conservative to publicly fly his Flag. My hope is that in doing this, I will cause people to ask questions, investigate and learn about their American Heritage.

As an independent voter,The Crusty Conservative has great admiration for the last President of the United States who was a member of neither the Republican nor the Democratic parties –

Millard Fillmore

(January 7, 1800 – March 8, 1874)

13_fillmore_1

The 13th President of the United States (1850–1853) was neither a Democrat nor a Republican. As Zachary Taylor‘s vice president, he assumed the presidency after Taylor’s death. Fillmore was a lawyer from western New York state. He was a vocal opponent of the policies of President Andrew Jackson and his Democratic Party. In particular, he supported the supremacy of Congress over the Presidency and favored a program of modernization, banking and economic protectionism to stimulate American  manufacturing.

Why…

…isn’t tomorrow (10/18)  a national holiday at least equal in significance to Independence Day (July 4th) ?

On October 18th,1781,British General Charles Cornwallis surrendered his British Army to America’s supreme commander General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia.

Cornwallis-Surrender-combo-cz

Cornwallis’ surrender effectively ended the Revolutionary War granting the 13 American Colonies their independence and ending years of British tyrannical rule.

Why October 18th is not a major national holiday in the U.S. to commemorate Washington’s victory and the freeing of the colonies we will never know. But, please join us in flying your American Flag to personally commemorate the significance of this date to every American.
