Memorial Day Refections

Last night, I re-watched the 2014 presentation of the Memorial Concert and Tribute concertwhich is held annually on the Capitol steps and west lawn.

The 2014 program featured a salute to the “God Star Mother” whose son was the first America serviceman killed freeing Afghanistan. A very talented actress recounted the mother’s story in the mother’s own words. She spoke about the pride that she felt in her son’s enlistment and early service in the US Army. She spoke about reading a TV news ticker reporting that two US Rangers had be killed fighting the muslim Taliban in the hell hole they call Afghanistan. And how she trembled later that day when a uniformed Army Officer appeared at her door to inform her that her son was one of those Rangers killed in Afghanistan. She spoke of the comfort and support that she received from a group of “Gold Star Mothers” of who she was now one helped her deal with her grief and despair. And she spoke about how she thereafter dedicated her life to working with the “Gold Star Mother’s Association” to help and console other mothers who were losing sons and daughters on a daily basis fighting against international muslim terrorism.

In the second tribute, award winning actor Gary Sinise told in a young US Marine’s own semper fiwords the story of that young man’s loss of two legs and most of two arms fighting to free Fallujah and Iraq’s Anbar Province. He spoke of the pain, the anger and the deep depression that he experienced  struggling to cope with his pain, with his new disabilities and at the same time the loss of his first wife who could not deal with his fate as a quadruple amputee. But as the former Marine sat in the audience with his new wife and child, we heard of how he regained his will to live and build a new life despite his physical and mental scars.

These two heroes are but two examples of the bravery of and sacrifices made by the thousands of young Americans and their families defending America from mad, tyrannical religious fanatics.

viet nam memorial I salute and honor each and every one of them on this Memorial Day. But as I do, I cannot help but wonder how that “Gold Star Mother” and the thousands of other families of the brave Americans who have sacrificed their bodies, their minds and indeed gave their lives fighting to free Afghanistan from the muslim Taliban must feel now. How do they cope with the fact that the “Traitor in Chief” in the White House has pulled our troops out of Afghanistan only to now let the Taliban once again regain control of the country?

I also wonder how that young Marine amputee and the thousands of other young Americans who sacrificed life and limbs fighting and dying to free Falluja, Ramadi and entire Anwar Provence feel today as they watch the US government stand idly by while  Islamic Jihadists retake control over the areas that they and their comrades  fought and died freeing.

On this Memorial Day, I sincerely thank every man and woman who ever served in the US Military and their families, but I also despise those few politicians who in many cases have made the sacrifices of our military meaningless.

It is therefore not only their right, but their duty, to declare them.”
