The Crusty Conservative’s Ongoing Commentary re the 2014 Winter Olympics

costas

  • Why does NBC have sports anchor Bob Costas dressing in a suit and tie every night while hosting the winter olympics? The poor guy who is already uncomfortable, because he must wear his glasses vs. contacts because of an eye infection, looks not only uncomfortable but grossly out of place hosting this sporting event in a full suit and tie. He would look much more appropriate and more comfortable in ski sweater and slacks or anything more casual. NBC – please give the guy a break. He is not covering a dignitary’s funeral, a formal social event or a State of the Union speech. It is a casual sporting event. Loosen up and stop taking yourself and the event so seriously.

2014 US Olympic Team

  • The US Olympic team in Sochi is comprised of 230 athletes and over 400 officials. Say What – two officials for every competitor? And they say the Olympics is all about the athletes! Come again, it like the old ethnic joke – How many (name you ethnic group) does it take to screw in a light bulb?

George Zimmerman = Innocent Until Proven Guilty ??

George Zimmerman = Innocent Until Proven Guilty ??

Last night, while watching the news coverage of George Zimmerman’s murder trial acquittal on Fox News and CNN, several reporters and pundits preached a startling new line. Over George-Zimmermanand over again, they kept saying that Zimmerman “had not been found innocent” of the murdering Trayvon Martin. Rather, they reasoned that the prosecution had simply not been able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Zimmerman was guilty.  The implication was that Zimmerman was guilty, but the prosecutors were too inept in collecting and presenting the evidence to prove it.

Wow!  Whoa!  Stop the presses!

I always thought that the underlying principle of the American justice system was that a person was innocent until they were proven guilty of a crime. If that is indeed the case, yesterday’s jury verdict proclaimed George Zimmerman’s innocence.

Did not Zimmerman enter the courtroom

Whether you like it or not George Zimmerman was declared “innocent” by a jury of his peers  in a court of justice.

as an innocent man under the presumption of innocence doctrine?  Did not the jury thereafter find him “Not Guilty” of the charges brought?  Then I ask, did not George Zimmerman leave the courtroom yesterday just as he came in to it  – An Innocent Man under the presumption of innocence doctrine?

Wake up Fox News. Wake up CNN. Whether you like it or not George Zimmerman was declared “innocent” by a jury of his peers  in a court of justice.

Differences Between Conservatives & Liberals Defined

Differences Between Conservatives & Liberals Defined-

Fox News Chief Roger Ailes

Fox News Chief
Roger Ailes

Mike Lee, my 28 year old conservative grandson from of Ventura, California,  recently sent me a copy of a speech by Roger Ailes the Chairman and CEO of Fox News as well as the Chairman of Fox Television Stations gave in accepting the prestigious Bradley Prize on June 12 in Washington, D.C.  It included the following story which both Mike and I feel explains the difference between liberals and conservatives.

“Of course, the country’s split politically. Democrats and Republicans can’t get along. And it is hard to figure out if it is ever going to get back together. But I heard a story about a guy who was in a hot air balloon. He was lost and he lowered his altitude. He spotted a man down below and descended a bit more and then called out to him. He said, “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I’d meet him an hour ago, and I don’t know where I am.” The man on the ground consulted his GPS and replied, “You’re in a hot air balloon approximately 30 feet above ground elevation at 2,346 feet above sea level. You are 31 degrees, 14 minutes north latitude; 100 degrees, 49 minutes west longitude,” and the guy in the balloon said, “You must be a conservative,” and he said, “I am. How did you know that?” He said, well, “Everything you told me is technically correct but I have no idea what to make of your information. The fact is I’m still lost — and frankly, you haven’t been very much help so far.” The guy on the ground yelled up: “You must be a liberal.” He said, “I am. How did you know that?” He said, “Well, you don’t know where you’re going or where you’ve been, you’ve risen to where you are on hot air. You made a promise which you have no idea how to keep. You expect me to solve your problem. The fact is you’re in the same place you were before we met and now it’s my fault!”

Thank You American Taxpayers

Quick Quip – Thank You American Taxpayers, but you shouldn’t have done it!

$10 million cost to fight So. Calif. fire shared by all taxpayers.

$10 million cost to fight So. Calif. fire shared by all taxpayers.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all of the taxpayers outside of California for their kind but forced generosity in covering the $10 million costs of fighting a brush fire here in Southern California.

Three weeks ago, there was a major brush fire across town from where I live. At its height, 2,000 + firefighters from as far as 400 miles away were involved in fighting the fire which threatened 4,000+ homes and eventually consumed over 28,000 acres of brush, park land and agriculture property.

The firefight was not without cost. Although no homes were lost to the fire, the cost of fighting it was estimated to be in excess of $10 million. However, fear not for the local jurisdictions within whose borders the fire burnt. Low and behold, it was announced this week that the federal government (meaning taxpayers from as far away as Florida and Maine) will foot the bill.

I sincerely thank all taxpayers for your generosity but I also sincerely question why you should have to pay the costs of a local firefighting effort. Is that the duty of taxpayers who probably never heard of Camarillo, Point Magu or Newbury Park – the areas that their tax dollars paid to defend from the fire? Is that the role of the federal government and if so why?  Spreading the wealth? Is it the shared burden imposed by socialism? Who knows?

Thank you taxpayers but is your gift really necessary or for that matter appropriate?  You shouldn’t have done it!

Quick Quip – de je Vous All Over Again

Senate Wartergate Hearing where question - "Who knew what and when? - was 1st asked.

Senate Wartergate Hearing where question – “Who knew what and when? – was 1st asked.

Forty years ago, as the Watergate scandal played out, the question most asked by lawmakers and journalists in Washington was “Who knew what and when?”

This morning, I heard Bret Baier on Fox News again ask the same question, only this time regarding the Benghazi   scandal and IRS-gate – “Who knew what and when?”

Here we go again – Nothing ever changes but the players and the color of their uniforms.
